ReST Smart Bed – Mattress Review

Details

Hey everyone, today we’re going to take a look at the ReST smart bed. This mattress is completely different from any other mattress I’ve reviewed because it dynamically changes pressure throughout the night to provide an optimal amount of sleep. It does this via five unique air chambers at the bottom of the mattress. So, let’s take a look. (inspiring music)Your ReST mattress will come in a box that’s a bit bigger than other mattresses I’ve unboxed because it holds extra components.

When you open it up, you’ll find that the mattress itself is folded in half, but all the other pieces are fully assembled, so the air chambers and hoses are already connected. You’ll also find other boxes that house the air pumps and tablets used to control the mattress. I was surprised to find that you actually get two pumps instead of one, so those are used to control each side of the bed. You also get two tablets, which is pretty cool because most companies would probably just force you to download it to your phone. Now I can use a dedicated device to control my mattress.

The setup process of a ReST smart bed is a bit more involved than your typical mattress. In fact, when you get it onto your bed, it sort of looks like a deflated air mattress. But don’t worry, once you get everything set up, it’ll come to life soon. Next, you’re going to want to connect the hoses to the air pumps, and this is a really easy process since they snap right in. Each group of hoses is connected to a separate pump, and they’re each labeled for the corresponding zone, such as your head, shoulders, and lumbar.ReST smart bed air mattress

At this point, don’t worry about which is right or left. Now, once the hoses are connected and the pumps are plugged in, the mattress will start inflating automatically. You probably won’t hear it, but trust me, it will start working and take about 15 minutes to start looking like an actual bed. Now, I know what you may be thinking: is the motor quiet or is it going to keep me awake at night? It’s a really good question, and actually, I was pretty surprised myself.

This is actually a really quiet motor. I’ve got one right here. So if we plug this in, it will start to do its little bit of setup, but we have some recording equipment in the studio for this review, and we’re going to get it right up to the mic. (upbeat guitar music) (clicking) (gentle, steady whirring) So you can see how quiet it is, even with the mic right up to the motor. If it’s underneath your bed, you’re really not going to hear it at all.

The app comes preinstalled on both tablets; otherwise, you can download it to your phone. It’s available on both the Google Play Store and iOS. I found setting up the app to be the most tedious part of this whole process. When you open it, it asks for an update. Once it’s updated, you then need to find each pump on your Wi-Fi network.

Once you connect to one, you have to name it and then disconnect, find the other pump, and then name that pump as well. For this review, I named one side “me, Ben” and the other side “Katherine.” Now, if you want another device set up, you have to repeat the whole process. The app starts out in automatic mode, which means it automatically adjusts based on weight distributed across the mattress, and it gets these readings from a pressure-sensitive mat built inside. The app does a great job of showing you pressure points in real-time and showing you which zones are inflated more than others.

There’s also a manual mode that allows you to add more air to each zone by sliding this dial up and down. Overall, I really enjoyed the app, but there were times when it would randomly disconnect. Additionally, when I was in manual mode, it wasn’t easy to make the adjustments I needed. For example, if I dialed down one of the zones a bit, it wouldn’t respond. However, if I disconnected it from the network and reconnected it, I was able to make the adjustments.

It wasn’t a big issue, but it was a little tedious. Now, let’s talk a bit about construction because this mattress basically comes fully assembled, and I want to talk about each layer so you know what you’re getting. The first layer is what ReST calls the Sleep Skin layer, which is basically a polyester fabric cover. It’s smooth to the touch and has a very silky feel, similar to athletic wear. What I like about it is that it really allows those layers underneath to do their work.

Underneath the Sleep Skin layer, you’ll find a four-inch layer of cooling gel foam. This foam layer is a bit softer than I’d want on a typical mattress, but for the ReST mattress, it really does work and makes sense. Underneath the foam layer, you’ll find the Smart Sensor, which is where most of the technology resides. Each side of the mattress has its own Smart Sensor to collect data for each sleeper. Each of the Smart Sensors is encased in antimicrobial fabric and has a thousand data points per side that relay data back to the app and the pump.

Underneath the Smart Sensor, you’ll find five medical-grade polyurethane air chambers. Each of these chambers makes up the different zones of the mattress, so they inflate and deflate to allow for different pressure points throughout. All of this is encased in a rigid foam border that allows you to sleep right up to the edge of the mattress. Yes, you can even put your shoes on easily on this mattress. All in all, it was just a really fun experience opening this thing up and discovering all of this technology inside.

It’s something I normally don’t get to do. Normally, it’s just spring and foam, but this had all kinds of fun surprises. When we talk about feel, obviously this mattress is different than all the others that I’ve tried, so you really can’t say that it’s too firm, too soft, or just right because you can change that feel, as can your partner. So, I really do say this is good for all sleepers because I’ve tried it on all settings. I’ve tried it on the softest, which I wouldn’t recommend because it feels like you’re sort of in a cave, but that option is available.

We pumped it up to the firmest setting, and I’m telling you, if you’re a stomach or back sleeper, it’s going to work like magic. Now, I prefer to sleep on my side, and I do have rather broad shoulders, and I really appreciated the ability to drop the pressure where my shoulders are and then pump up the pressure where my lumbar is. It just really evened me out, and I could see myself sleeping in that position all night long. This leads me to my next point, where you do have the automatic adjustments that will adjust when you move. That did take some getting used to because it is a subtle feel where you may subtly feel it inflate or deflate once you move into a new position.

Long term, I can see myself using this in manual mode where I really find my optimal position and pressure and just leave that setting and use that going forward. In terms of motion transfer, each set of bladders is broken into four separate sleepers, so my wife has her set, and I have my set. You’re not going to catch any waves if I move around, and that air isn’t going to transfer over to her side. In terms of sleeping hot, these don’t really sleep hot. “It’s just one layer of foam; underneath that is basically air, so there’s not a lot of material to trap heat.

All in all, I’m very impressed with the versatility of this mattress. A queen-size ReST mattress retails for $5,799, which is a hit to the pocketbook, but this is the only mattress I’ve tried with these multiple zones that dynamically adjust, so there’s really nothing else like it on the market. It does come with a 90-day trial period, which means you can try it for 90 days. If you don’t like it, you can return it without restocking fees or return shipping fees, so it does give you peace of mind. If you do decide to keep it, it comes with a 10-year warranty, which is critical because most mattress companies offer a 10-year warranty, but this has very sophisticated components.

It has two pumps, hoses, and apps, all of which are backed by the 10-year warranty. In conclusion, paying $5,799 for a mattress is a tall ask, but if you’ve tried other mattresses, including foams and hybrids, and you’re not finding the relief you need, I think the ReST bed would be a great choice. Remember, you’re backed by that 90-day trial period. It did have a few shortcomings, particularly the app. It was not easy to work with or set up, and it was a bit clunky, but it is an app, and apps are just one update away from being great, so give it time, and I think it’ll get there.
